Understanding Custom Post Types on Your Website

Learn how custom post types work on your site and how we use them to manage players, coaches, commitments, and events.

Your website is built with Custom Post Types (CPTs) and Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) to make managing structured content simple and consistent. Instead of designing each page manually, we use CPTs to create reusable content templates—this keeps your site professional and easy to maintain.

What is a Custom Post Type?

  • WordPress comes with two default post types: Posts (like a blog) and Pages.

  • A Custom Post Type extends WordPress by adding new sections tailored to your needs (e.g., Players, Coaches, Commitments, Events).

  • Each CPT has specific fields built with ACF (Advanced Custom Fields) so you can easily enter structured information.

Examples of Custom Post Types on Your Site:

  • Players – Profile pages for athletes, with fields for name, position, graduation year, bio, and photo.

  • Coaches – Consistent layouts for staff profiles, including contact info and certifications.

  • Commitments – Displays athletes’ college commitments in a clean, sortable format.

  • Events – Used for camps, tryouts, and tournaments with date, location, and registration links.

How Content is Displayed

We use modules (within BeaverBuilder or shortcodes) to display posts from a specific CPT:

  • For example, the Coaches Module can pull all staff profiles from the “Coaches” post type.

  • You can filter what displays by Category (e.g., showing only “Girls Teams” coaches).

  • This keeps content centralized: update the post once, and it automatically updates anywhere it’s displayed.

Benefits of Using CPTs and ACF

  • Consistency – Every profile, event, or commitment follows the same layout.

  • Efficiency – No need to design a new page for each person or event—just add a new entry.

  • Organization – Categories and tags make filtering content simple for visitors.

  • Scalability – As your programs grow, adding new players, coaches, or events stays quick and structured.

Key Takeaway

Custom Post Types and ACF allow us to build specialized sections of your site that are easy to update, filter, and display anywhere. Whether it’s showcasing a new coach, listing player commitments, or promoting events, CPTs keep your site professional, efficient, and consistent.
