How to Reset Your WordPress User Password

Learn how to reset your WordPress password from the login screen or dashboard and keep your account secure.

If you’ve forgotten your WordPress password or need to update it for security reasons, there are several easy ways to reset it. Keeping your login credentials secure is an important part of protecting your website and user accounts.

Option 1: Reset Your Password from the Login Screen

  1. Go to your website’s login page:

    • Example: yourwebsite.com/wp-admin or yourwebsite.com/wp-login.php

  2. Click Lost your password? below the login form.

  3. Enter your username or email address and click Get New Password.

  4. You’ll receive an email with a password reset link.

  5. Click the link and enter a new secure password.

  6. Log in using your new credentials.

Tip: If you don’t see the email, check your spam or junk folder.

Option 2: Reset Your Password from the Dashboard

If you’re already logged in but want to change your password:

  1. From your WordPress dashboard, go to Users > Profile.

  2. Scroll down to the Account Management section.

  3. Click Set New Password.

  4. Enter a strong password (WordPress will rate its strength).

  5. Click Update Profile to save your new password.

Option 3: Ask an Administrator to Reset It for You

If you can’t access your account email or the password reset link doesn’t work, another user with Administrator access can reset your password:

  1. The admin logs in and goes to Users > All Users.

  2. Finds your username and clicks Edit.

  3. Scrolls down to Account Management > Set New Password.

  4. Creates a new password and clicks Update User.

You’ll then be able to log in using the new password.

Best Practices for Password Security

  • Use a strong password that includes a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.

  • Avoid reusing passwords from other websites.

  • Update your password at least twice a year.

  • Never share your credentials via email.
